Liberia After 1822 is the second volume of a project that began with Liberia Before 1822, an account of the African societies, polities and trade networks that occupied the coast and interior long before the American Colonization Society arrived.

His work draws together African history, American colonization records, genealogical evidence, treaties, maps and oral traditions to present a comprehensive reassessment of Liberia's formation—one that recognizes the experiences of the settlers without erasing the sovereignty and historical presence of the Indigenous peoples who inhabited the land before them.
